CFA protection plans that will be delivered to homes from today rate the danger for Wodonga as high to very high.
While those in the valleys face the threat from the heavily timbered national parks, it suggests grass fires and bushfires on the urban fringe pose the greatest danger to the city.
Maps of Wodonga also show the potential for green belts to carry fires into the heart of the city’s residential areas.
The hard-hitting message from the CFA warns that not every home can be protected.
Baranduda is highlighted as being at high risk from both grass and forest fires.
The CFA protection plan also said the residential area is exposed to ember attacks during a bushfire.
The plan also shows five of the high-risk towns have no sanctuary for people whose own bushfire plan has failed.
Glenrowan and Mitta are the only North East towns rated as extreme fire risks.
The speed of a forest fire is said to be the greatest threat to Mitta, while the Warby-Ovens National Park poses the greatest danger to Glenrowan and the nearby Wangaratta suburb of Hamilton Park.
CFA Hume regional manager Alan Davies said the plans had been developed in consultation with local communities, councils, brigades and various government agencies for people who are in areas most at risk of bushfire or grass fire this summer.
“Township protection plans will help locals and visitors identify important community assets, primary roads to exit the area, where to go, survival options and important emergency contact information,” he said.
Mr Davies said the plans will be going out to every home in the target communities as part of a mail-out to 400,000 addresses across Victoria.
“Bushfire and grass fire are an ever-present danger in these townships and all are classified as having a bushfire risk of very high or extreme,” he said.
“Now is the time to start preparing.
“The township protection plan is one piece of paper that every family in a high risk area should have up on their fridge.”
