ABC Goulburn Murray began broadcasting on the AM band as 2CO on December 16, 1931, from a small studio at the Albury post office.
Today it is on the FM band, its main studio is in High Street, Wodonga, and another base at Shepparton.
Regional content manager and breakfast announcer Gaye Pattison said the milestone would be marked with a garden party at Wodonga’s Belvoir Park on Friday.
A double-header breakfast show with Pattison and Matt Dowling, who usually hosts the Shepparton early-morning shift, will be broadcast from the park with Joseph Thomsen’s morning program also live from the site.
“We’d like to get as many people, turning 80 on the day, down there on the day as possible,” Pattison said. “We would like to treat them as VIPs as part of our special day.
“This is about saying thank-you to loyal listeners for their input.”
The celebration will also feature children singing carols and a sausage sizzle.
Afternoon presenter Kathy Bedford will do her statewide show from Wodonga’s Gateway Island visitor information centre on Thursday.
Radio chief Kate Dundas and regional manager Tony Rasmussen will visit the Border for the anniversary.
ABC Goulburn Murray has had several Albury homes, including in Townsend Street and a purpose-built studio on the corner of Wilson and Olive streets.
2CO converted to FM in 1992 and later changed its name from the callsign which reflected its main transmitter being near Corowa.
The big change in the past decade has been expansion into the internet with Allison Jess since 2007.
