Officers on motorbikes were patrolling the streets of Beechworth on Friday afternoon.
Ross Gordon from Stanley was coming into town to pick up a takeaway order, with his son Rielly Gordon driving.
"We were headed into town to support one of our local restaurants and turned into the roundabout and saw motorbike police," he said.
"We pulled up and they followed us.
"They had a few questions, like were we locals, what were we doing, and one of the officers was checking our registration and wanted to match the licence with the registration."
The father-son pair received a few extra questions as Rielly has permission from VicRoads to drive with his Queensland licence, as the family recently moved to Stanley and Rielly travels often to work.
"As he bought a car late last year, he has temporary approval to have the car registered in his name until he can get into VicRoads between stints working away," Mr Gordon said.
"We had the fires and then of course this hit, but VicRoads are OK with the arrangement."
Mr Gordon said it was great to see officers enforcing the public directions issued by the Chief Health Officer.
"It is important ... unfortunately some people don't understand what essential and non-essential is," he said.
