ALBURY Thunder president Rick O'Connell has cautiously welcomed the option of the Border being used as a temporary training base by Melbourne Storm to prepare for the re-booted NRL season.

O'Connell said there could be major spin-offs if the plan was able to be put into place in time.
Former NRL player and Albury-based solicitor Mike Eden spoke to Storm football general manager Frank Ponissi at the weekend while the option is set to be discussed by Albury Council.
"A lot would have to happen before it got off the ground but it would to awesome if all the boxes were able to be ticked off," O'Connell said.

"A lot of things would come into it I'd imagine particularly if it's a locked stadium."
Melbourne Storm has previously used Greenfield Park for under-20 trials while Lavington's No.2 oval facilities are nearing completion.
The NRL is planning to restart the competition on May 28 and intends to play a full State of Origin series.
