Kane Corben, 25, is facing seven charges following his arrest on Saturday.
He allegedly attended the Wodonga Bunnings and stole a cache of items including Dewalt work boots, cargo pants, a headlight, hoodie, gloves, wire cutters and more, worth $442.
He allegedly left through a fire exit, chased by staff.
The Wodonga Magistrates Court on Monday heard Corben approached a man in his car and threatened him with the weapon.
The man froze in fear, laid down in the passenger seat, and Corben was allegedly unable to steal the vehicle.
He fled and was arrested by police nearby.
Lawyer Sally Wilson did not apply for bail.
"It's still very much in its infancy," she said of the police case.
"He was charged on Saturday.
"There's no application (for release)."
