Adam Perez's deceptions drew the ire of Albury Local Court magistrate Richard Funston this week.
While Perez wasn't charged in connection with the card, which was stolen from a car parked outside a Thurgoona home, he was facing two charges of dishonestly obtaining property by deception.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The 27-year-old tapped the card on the EFTPOS machine at the Lavington Coles Express store on Wagga Road to buy $27.95 in cigarettes and a $4.60 expresso coffee.
He then bought a $4.90 iced coffee milk drink from the BP service station on Travelstop Way, Lavington.
Perez, who according to court documents works as an asbestos remover, told Mr Funston that what he did was "stupid, a stupid mistake" and ultimately the result of "mixing with the wrong crowd".
Mr Funston said there was no real excuse.
"Well, it's a pretty low act for a person who has got work. I mean, it's the kind of behaviour you might expect to see in the Children's Court ... it's pathetic really."
Perez, who pleaded guilty, admitted his methamphetamine addiction was a strong factor in his offending.
In response, Mr Funston urged him to do something about getting treatment.
"You need to go see a GP, you need to get a referral," he said.
"If you continue to use 'ice' you'll be dead, and you'll be in custody before you're dead."
Perez was convicted and fined $1000 over the deceptions, which occurred on March 24 just after 3am.
The card was taken up to four hours earlier.
