THE need to re-open Mount Buffalo chalet in the context of attracting tourists to return to the North East after the covid-19 outbreak has been raised with federal Treasurer.

Indi MP Helen Haines said she had spoken to Josh Frydenberg about the derelict guesthouse at a meeting in Canberra this week.
"I know that our communities love our Mount Buffalo chalet and I would be encouraging both federal and state government to invest in that as a magnificent gesture towards our tourism recovery in this region," Dr Haines said.
She plans to write to relevant Victorian and federal government ministers urging them to act and believes energy supply problems can be overcome with fresh thinking.

"I would say now to any government that we have modern mechanisms to generate electricity up there, we have renewable energy sources, there's the opportunity for pumped hydro there, there's the opportunity for solar," Dr Haines said.
The plea follows the Victorian Nationals leader Peter Walsh urging the state government to set up a $200 million tourism fund, part of which could help re-open the chalet which has been closed since 2007.
His colleague member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy echoed Mr Walsh's push.
"(A) report identified proposals for reinvigorating the chalet that included a café and glass-bottomed walkway at the gorge, now is the time to make those ideas a reality with this (proposed) funding," Mr McCurdy said.
