Craig is the reigning CAW Cricketer of the Year, hitting 519 runs and snaring 24 wickets.
Co-coach Craig was central to Wodonga's premiership and also tasted success with Victoria in the Country Championships.
"It's pretty exciting," he said.
"Ben Vague (Melbourne coach) and I have been talking and the way he talks about the club and how he wants to run Melbourne sparked an interest," Craig said.
"The people they've got at the club also sparked an interest for me. It's not just about playing a game of cricket but developing and hopefully I can develop under some of the people who are there.
"Cameron White, the captain, has been there and done that. I'd love to listen and ask a lot of questions and get to know how he rolls.
"Greg Shipperd, who's been the Victorian coach for many years, now coaches a Big Bash club and it'll be good to pick his brains and let him speak to me about the way he thinks of cricket and how to bat. Maybe I can get a pointer or two from him."
Craig admitted Melbourne's interest came "out of the blue" but talks progressed quickly.
