The bombshell decision which could set off a major chain reaction from other competitions was made at a special meeting between the clubs on Wednesday night.

Clubs were asked to vote whether they were prepared to play into October to enable a shortened season where every club played each other once plus finals.

In a resounding outcome clubs voted nine to three against extending the season into October.

Osborne, Culcairn and Lockhart were prepared to play beyond the traditional season endpoint of mid September.

League president Brendan I'Anson said the league was then forced to make the tough call of not awarding a premiership due to time constraints.

"If football starts there won't be enough time for clubs to play each other once plus finals and finish before October," I'Anson said.

"It doesn't mean there won't be football this season because clubs are still keen to explore other options to play later in the year.

"As a league we are keeping an open mind to what format that could be.

"But there will be no premiership cup or flag because we have simply run out of time."

The Hume league is the first competition in the district to rule on the future of its season.

I'Anson said the Hume, O&M, Tallangatta and O&K leagues were set to meet early next month.

"We will probably just see what unfolds in regards to the further easing of coronavirus restrictions over the next month," he said.

"You talk to the coaches and players and they are still busting to get out there and play.

"Every club in the league remains committed to playing, especially junior football which is a priority.

"Initially the focus will be on juniors.

"Clubs are still waiting on a ruling as to how big a crowd is allowed to attend matches once restrictions are eased further."

Hume league clubs are still waiting for the NSW government to rule when training can commence.
