Simmons, who finished seventh in a time of 53 minutes 35 seconds in the inaugural race, said he was disappointed the popular event couldn't go ahead.
"It's just one of those things this year," Simmons said.
"It was bit wet in 1996 but the race went ahead.
"That's as close as I can remember it to ever being called off.
"We have had a good run over the years."
Simmons holds the record for the most finishes in the annual race.
Organisers made the decision to cancel the community event earlier this week after initially postponing it in March when coronavirus restrictions came into place.
Vitasoy, Beyond Bank and a "prominent local business identity" have come together to raise money to help the Albury and Border Rescue Squad purchase an emergency light tower this year.
