Albury's Kiewa Street Rotary market reopens after COVID-19 shutdown

About 70 stallholders selling a mix of goods including hot food, drinks, arts and crafts, clothing and fresh fruit and vegetables set up in the car park for the weekly event run by the Belvoir-Wodonga and Albury North Rotary clubs.

Among the COVID-19 precautions were separate entrances and exits, signage, hand sanitisers and volunteers monitoring numbers.

Market committee member Trevor Pearce, of Belvoir-Wodonga, said the crowd matched what would be expected during winter, about 900 adults for the day, and did not reach the cap of 350 patrons that fitted in with one person per four square metres.

"We've got clickers and we do a count down an aisle and then multiply that for the number of aisles we've got," he said.

"As the guys are getting used to it, they can almost pick by just looking but we do a formal count every half hour."

Stallholders Michele Randon and Terry Dare said they had no hesitation returning to sell their vegetables, as they had done at the Rotary market for 43 years.

"We've nearly sold out," Ms Randon said.

"We've got a good 1.5 metres between us and customers anyway and then the money that comes in, we put it through a sterilising solution so any change we give customers, it's all been cleaned."

Mayview Flowers' Julie Paterson, a stallholder for more than 25 years, was also pleased the market had reopened.

One of her customers, Michelle Bedggood, of Henty, came along for some flowers "and to have a bit of a look around".

She and daughter Amelia were trying to practise social distancing and felt others were remaining aware as well.

"They all seem pretty good really, considering there seems to be a lot of people here," she said.

Mr Pearce said organisers had been nervous Victoria's present COVID-19 spike might have delayed the market's return and continued to follow NSW health guidelines.

"We're just glad to be up and running again and making a dollar for the community again," he said.
