Liberal Party wants seat of Albury held by its own Justin Clancy to include Lockhart and not the old Tumbarumba Shire

It has put that scenario forward in a submission to the NSW Electoral Commission which is overseeing a redistribution of seats before the next state election in 2023.

The party posits: "Now that Tumbarumba Shire is amalgamated into Snowy Valleys LGA with Tumut it is an obvious addition to Wagga.

"To compensate Albury, all of Lockhart LGA is transferred to Albury, except The Rock, which is only 31 kilometres from Wagga.

"Including Lockhart in the electoral district of Albury along with Urana, Jerilderie and Corowa is logical."

Lockhart Shire general manager Peter Veneris said it was preferable to stay in Wagga considering his residents looked to Wagga more than Albury and "splitting the local government area between two electorates would be problematic".

Snowy Valleys councillor Bruce Wright, who lives at Tumbarumba, said based on the performance of Albury MP Justin Clancy he would prefer to stay in that seat.

"Wagga people have no perception what it's like down at Khancoban, Bringenbrong or Jingellic, the far-flung areas of the shire," Cr Wright said.

"Justin knows those areas intimately."

The last mayor of Tumbarumba Shire Ian Chaffey noted the area had swapped regularly between Wagga and Albury in the decades before 2004.

"It doesn't matter which electorate we're in, it's the calibre of the representative that matters," Mr Chaffey said.

Meanwhile, the Nationals have submitted that the seat of Murray, which extends from Berrigan Shire to the South Australian border and up to Griffith be abolished and become Murray-Darling.

The new electorate would not include Griffith but cover Broken Hill and extend to the Queensland boundary across areas now part of the seat of Barwon.

The party argues it would reduce the size of Barwon, which now covers one-third of NSW, and bring together those in Broken Hill and Deniliquin who share similar concerns about northern basin irrigators.

However, the incumbent member for Murray Helen Dalton sees the submission as a bid to remove her, because as a Griffith resident she would be relocated into Barwon, held by her fellow Shooters, Farmers and Fishers MP Roy Butler.

"They're doing everything they can in trying to get rid of me," Ms Dalton said.

Comments on the submissions are being taken by the electoral commission up until next Wednesday.
