And for Halo Advanced Cosmetic Tattoo owner Simone Naismith that was through a complete digital facelift.
Thanks to a free La Trobe University program the Albury business owner has been able to stay afloat during a time which would have otherwise driven the business into the ground.
"Most of my business was through word of mouth, and while I had a social media presence and a website it wasn't optimised to attract new clients," she said.
"Through the program I have been able to upskill in that digital space which has enabled me to maintain contact with my clients, in a time where we couldn't see each other face to face."
Ms Naismith is one of 20 small businesses taking part in the La Trobe COVID-19 Industry Response Program.
A new eight-week course, Design and Grow Your Digital Presence, is also likely to draw strong interest from regional businesses affected by the pandemic in areas including digital storytelling and social marketing.
The course is funded by the Victorian government and developed in partnership with Investible, an early-stage investment group and experts in entrepreneurial and business development.
"I had to close for three months when the first restrictions came into place and couldn't treat any clients so that was a main driver as to why I took my business online and started offering online consultations," Ms Naismith said.
"This has really been a lifeline for me."
IN OTHER NEWS:
La Trobe Pro Vice-Chancellor industry engagement Dr Megan Fisher said the university was working closely with business owners every day.
"We know the significant challenges many of them now face, as they respond to this ever-changing situation. In many cases it's not just their business that is affected, but the livelihood, and wellbeing of their staff, and community," she said.
"Our latest program will go beyond helping Victoria's businesses and communities weather this pandemic. Its positive impact will last for years to come.
"We're pleased to be able to deliver it for free to businesses, thanks to the support of the Victorian government."
Applications are open via the La Trobe website for the Design and Grow Your Digital Presence free course which starts in August.
Business owners from all major industries and sectors are encouraged to apply, including food and beverage, hospitality, fashion, beauty, home goods and furniture.
