Border anglers caught in a net of restriction confusion | Fishing

Righto, NSW residents can't go into Victoria to fish, so that one's pretty clear cut.

NSW fishos can fish anywhere in NSW but those of us that live in the "bubble" have been asked to limit our travel so those decisions are up to you. It's fine for NSW residents to fish the northern side of Bethanga Bridge, so that means the only ramp available is at Bowna.

Victorian residents, apart from those in lockdown, can fish anywhere in Victoria apart from the lockdown areas as long as they don't need to come into NSW.

Victorians who live in the "bubble" and wish to enter NSW without having to do the 14 days quarantine must stay within the bubble.

Those "bubble" people can also fish Lake Hume but must use ramps that are inside the bubble, which include Kookaburra and Ebden.

I believe all the above is the case at the time of writing but, as we've been discovering of late, things can change in a hurry.

Lake Hume (47 per cent): picked up quite a bit this week. Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few fishos missing out but there were also quite a few trout caught. They've all been good fish as far as I can see, with nearly all being over 600mm and the biggest I've heard of being 720!

There's no doubt you've gotta be one of the "chosen ones" to land one but you won't catch any sitting at home waiting for more reports.

It's also interesting to see a few yellas being caught.

It's not that unusual to hear of a very occasional one at this time of year and you'd normally say this is a bit early but they have definitely been showing up in better numbers than normal.

Local Lavington fisho "Sammy" reckons he's caught around 30 in the last month and boated another two last time he went out.

Sammy's just angling worms at trees in around seven metres (approx. 23') and we're also getting reasonable reports from fishos angling from the bank.

Actually had a Holbrook fisho in who gave me a good news/bad news story during the week.

The bad news was he's possibly the first victim of the "boat ramp rocks fiasco" and showed me where he'd taken a bit of bark off his shin when he slipped and fell on those bloody rocks out there.

The good news was he also landed two nice yellas on worms, with one being 3.2kg and the other 1.8kg.

Hayden Burles and brother, Steve, also slipped out on Wednesday and caught two nice yellas flicking plastics and blades about.

They also caught quite a few reddies, keeping about 10 or so for a feed.

Might be the fast-rising water turning them on?

While on the "rocks on ramps" issue, I had a phone call from Albury City this week.

They've had a bit of feedback from fishos concerned with the situation at the Bowna and Pines ramps and are in the process of sorting the issue out.

It won't be fixed overnight but they're hoping it should only take a couple of weeks or so.

Let's hope so because that Bowna ramp will be copping a bit of a workout seeing NSW residents can't go to any Vic ramps.

Dartmouth (53 per cent): fished well again during the week, with one fisho landing 14 for the day while flat lining!

Tassies were the go and the Greyhound and Golden Lab in the K-9 series were the pick of them.

He fished the main basin and out in front of Larsen's Creek area.

Streams: have been getting a nice drop for the spawning run and we now have only six weeks to go until the trout season opens again in Victoria.

We have to wait for another four weeks after that for the NSW trout season to open though.

The Murray: downstream of Albury is still producing good numbers of crays and with only five weeks left in the season (closes Monday, August 31), you'd better get your bum into gear if you want to catch one.

There's a few cod and yellas being angled and an odd one being picked up on lure too despite the river being hard to navigate, particularly up the top end.

Jack Kimpton and Nathan Hayes had to drag their punt between holes but managed an 82cm cod on a hard body lure which probably helped them forget the cold and wet feet.
