The force said it had been working with fellow emergency services "to monitor and facilitate the expedient transition of border crossings of emergency service vehicles during a crisis/emergency response".

"Systems in place have been working effectively, with no unnecessary delays reported," NSW Police said in a statement released Saturday afternoon.

"The CEO of Albury Wodonga Health has previously been consulted and steps are in place to ensure that medical staff in a private motor vehicle responding to an emergency are quickly identified and ushered through the checkpoints."

On Friday, Border doctors presented an open letter to the NSW and Victorian governments, saying the present border closure checkpoint situation could put lives at risk if staff or patients experienced delays getting through.

Member for Northern Victoria Tania Maxwell supported this call and pledged to send the letter to the Victorian Minister for Health and the Victorian cross-border commissioner.

NSW Police and other emergency services urged Border residents to call triple zero "when someone is seriously injured, in need of urgent medical help, or life or property is being threatened, so appropriate and timely response can be provided and unnecessary delays avoided".
