It follows supermarket giant Woolworths announcement on Friday that face coverings will be strongly encouraged in NSW stores as of Monday.
The COVID-19 safety measure has not been deemed mandatory for towns north of the border, unlike their Victorian neighbours.
Mr Mathews said he's happy for staff and customers to make their own decision regarding masks when entering his East Albury, Springdale Heights and Lockhart stores.
"In our environment at the moment we don't think it's necessary, but we'd never discourage anyone," Mr Mathews said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"If they want to wear a mask they can, if they don't, that's fine as well.
"We're doing everything we possibly can to keep our place as safe as possible with protective screens and sanitisation."
Mr Mathews added that face masks could also be purchased from his stores, with the coverings currently in high demand for residents south of the border.
"The masks are a two-fold thing," he said.
"If the person is ill that protects us and if they're afraid of someone giving them the virus that's smart for them as well.
"We'll follow what the government says.
"When they say masks, we'll go with the masks."
The announcement from Woolworths also applies to stores Big W, BWS and Dan Murphy's.
While the measures are being recommended, shoppers have been told they will not be turned away from the shops if they do not wish to comply.
It comes just a day after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced that all Victorians in regional areas will be required to wear face masks from Monday after another spike in COVID-19 cases was recorded.
Coles have said while masks are not mandatory in NSW, staff have the option to wear them if they wish.
