The woman, in her late 20s, was directed to isolate for 14 days under the Public Health Order regarding COVID-19 when she arrived in Wagga last Saturday.

Riverina Police District Inspector John Aichinger said officers discovered a week later that the woman had left her home.

"She had been around town, purchasing goods at various locations and using taxis," he said.

"Police went back and visited the individual to verify the information, as well as checking the circumstances with those businesses she visited, and she was issued a $1000 fine."

The fine comes as a reminder to the community of the importance of abiding by current restrictions and ministerial directions.

"It doesn't take a lot of people to spread this virus," Inspector Aichinger said.

"It only takes one. The way it multiplies means it's something that we just can't afford to let escape and we need to be compliant."

Inspector Aichinger also warned the public that second chances were not thrown around lightly.

"At this point in time, the focus really is on enforcement," he said.

"Obviously there will be some exceptions, but for the most part, the time for warnings and cautions has dissipated."
