Victorian schools welcome announcement VCE students to be individually assessed

Victorian Minister for Education James Merlino made the announcement while addressing the state today.

Disruption to classes and the wellbeing of year 12 students will be taken into consideration after what has been a challenging school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Catholic College Wodonga's deputy principal Shaun Mason said just because the school hadn't had a positive coronavirus case doesn't mean regional students haven't been disadvantaged.

"We're always open to accepting and welcoming any support that we can get for our students and we certainly appreciate any additional support," Mr Mason said.

"We just have some questions about how that's going to be applied fairly across the state."

Mr Merlino also announced that schools would have to rank where students stand now and where they may have been had the COVID-19 pandemic not hit.

A heavier workload is expected for year 12 students in the coming months, with students to still sit the GAT and exams.

"The idea of ranking them again based on a world without coronavirus seems like a very difficult process," Mr Mason said.

"The devil's in the detail in the next release from the government about how we might be able to go about doing that fairly and equitably against the state.

"We've got a great group of staff here and this year has demonstrated that more than any other in terms of their capacity to keep working for students."

Myrtleford's Marian College principal Cath Watter agreed staff had been working overtime to help students.

"What I've seen up until now and what I expect to see from here on is teachers doing absolutely everything they can to ensure that students get the absolute best outcomes," Mrs Watter said.

"My experience is we'll rise to the challenge and do it with positivity.

"We want our students to know we have every faith in them."
