NSW Health should have planned better to avoid the staffing crisis facing Albury hospital, the state Opposition's rural health spokeswoman believes.

Kate Washington, who was raised in Albury, said there had been a failure to prepare for the impact of banning doctors from Melbourne because of coronavirus exposure.
"They were warned, they would have known this would have been an issue, given the different arrangements on the border, and they haven't put things in place to avoid the crisis that we're heading into," Ms Washington said.
Ms Washington also wrote to NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard on Wednesday following AWH flagging the staffing squeeze as a result of the removal of access to Melbourne medicos.
"The border closure is clearly having significant impact on the provision of local health services in Albury, potentially placing people's lives at risk," she wrote.
"Additional professional health support is required in the area to ensure residents of Albury and the greater Murrumbidgee Local Health District can access the health services they need. Urgent staffing support must be provided to Albury Hospital and the Albury Wodonga Health Service to ensure there are not gaps in critical health services."
NSW Health's arm in the Riverina, the Murrumbidgee Local Health District, responded to the staff shortage by stating "Albury Base Hospital is the responsibility of Victoria Health (sic)".
However, it did add it was liaising with AWH "to offer assistance with sourcing doctors from NSW and with sourcing locums for the continuation of critical services".
IN OTHER NEWS:
Asked this week if it was an oversight from NSW Health to have created the scenario, AWH chief Michael Kalimnios said it was not ideal.
"One of the challenges with the border closure is probably there wasn't quite the planning we would have liked to actually make sure that we understood the impacts of the closures," Mr Kalimnios said.
"Once the issue's been identified...NSW Health as Vic health has have really sort of stepped up to the party to try to solve the issue."
Meanwhile, Ms Washington said the Labor Opposition supported the border closure of Liberal Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
Though she accepted Border residents felt some resentment.
"I get the sense there's a feeling in the community of being punished," Ms Washington said.
"However, if you're going to draw a line, there's no other line you can draw.
"The border is going to be where the line is drawn to protect NSW and unfortunately the Border is bearing the brunt."
