The car had skidded out of control before travelling down a steep embankment.
The 31-year-old had played football for Culcairn for several seasons, with president Andrew Godde yesterday saying the club was mourning the loss.
"It's a tragedy, really," he said.
"He was a nice young fella cut short in his years.
"Him and his brother Jye have been a big part of our football club over the years.
"We feel really sorry for his family, it was terrible news."
The late man won a reserves best and fairest with the Hume League club in 2015.
Mr Godde said they would wear black armbands when games resumed.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"That would be the least we could do," he said.
"We would have to talk to the committee about any other tributes, but it would be a given that they'd wear black armbands."
Mr Shields also played for Kiewa Sandy Creek and Dederang Mt Beauty.
Police continue to investigate the crash.
