Passing motorists noticed smoke coming from a Mullengandra church while driving on Bowna Road at about 3pm on Monday.
Emergency services were called and NSW Rural Fire and Rescue extinguished the blaze, which took hold of the front of the building.
Investigators said it appeared to be lit through a glass window.

Officers from Murray River Police District attended and investigations are ongoing.
Detectives have appealed for anyone who may have seen a black Jeep Grand Cherokee in the area around the time of the fire, particularly in the Clancy Road area, to contact police.
They believe the driver of the vehicle may be able to assist with inquiries.
