Daniel Sacco, 41, and Fadil Bedjeti, 36, were stopped by police while walking on All Saints Road at Wahgunyah on Saturday night.
A bag found in Sacco's backpack allegedly had ice with a net weight of 291 grams, and they allegedly had $44,830 cash between them with further money in a nearby truck.
The Wodonga Magistrates Court heard ice was worth up to $1000 a gram due to a shortage in the area.
Sacco on Monday said he had picked up the bag with ice on the roadside minutes before police spoke to the pair, and said the money was withdrawn superannuation and inheritance.
Bedjeti said his cash was from a car sale and he knew nothing of the drugs.
Both have been charged with commercial meth trafficking and possession, were refused bail, and will return to court on December 10.
