Melville has elected to dump cricket this summer to chase a spot at RIchmond VFL.
"He's got the skills, we've obviously backed him in and given him all the confidence he needs to do a pre-season," Newton said.
"We love him as a player and he's been very important to us for around four or five years now."
Not 22 until the start of next month, Melville has blossomed into a fine O and M senior player, either in the forward line or midfield.

"He's improved his fitness last pre-season (at Richmond last summer), I'm sure he either won or came second in the time trial," Newton enthused.
"He can also kick the ball further than you think, he can kick the ball 50, 55m and we'd back him in, whereas a lot of opposition clubs wouldn't think he would have the distance, but his kicking is his best attribute."
