Saturday was a day of firsts at Albury's Wodonga Place border checkpoint, with the introduction of the new three-lane peak hour system and an afternoon musical serenade.

President Barry Prater said the Albury contingent of the Albury-Wodonga Pipes and Drums band regaled checkpoint workers with their Celtic tunes to thank them for their hard work.
Their Wodonga-based members were unable to join them due to the Victorian and border restrictions.

"We just thought there's not that much entertainment going on around town, and the police, army and traffic controllers do a wonderful job, we thought we'd provide some free entertainment for them," he said.
Mr Prater said the band had been unable to practice at its usual Wodonga Showgrounds spot due to the border restrictions, so had taken to playing in Noreuil Park near the River Deck Cafe on Saturday about 12.30pm.
"Because of the virus and border control we can't perform as much," he said.
"It was very fun to get back to it. I had to scare the moths out of my kilt."
