Oranges have been removed from ALDI shelves at White Box Rise amid the contamination scare.
Police received reports of a possible needle contamination on Sunday after posts were shared on social media.
A needle was reportedly found in an orange at the White Box Rise shop, with a Facebook user writing that they had cut into the fruit and found the item.
Supermarket staff have contacted the customer who reported the incident and Wodonga detectives are investigating.
A police spokeswoman on Monday urged people to take care when consuming fruit.
"The matter will now be investigated to try and determine what has occurred, as this investigation is ongoing it would not be appropriate to comment further about the incident at this time," the spokeswoman said.
"Police will investigate any allegation of malicious food contamination and remind the community that anyone found to be contaminating food products can be charged with a serious indictable offence with penalties including up to 15 years in jail.
"It is important to note that many of the reports result in no criminal activity being detected.
"Police are appealing for people to take care when consuming fruit and (urge) anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
No oranges were available for sale at the White Box Rise store on Monday morning, but the product could still be purchased at the ALDI on Elgin Boulevard.
A company spokesman said it was an isolated incident.
"We have been in contact with the customer involved and are concerned to hear about this incident," the spokesman said.
"Due to its serious nature, an investigation is underway with Victoria Police.
"Tampering with food products is a serious crime.
"We can confirm that this is an isolated incident."
The last run of major contamination scares occurred in September 2018 when multiple punnets of strawberries were found to contain needles.
