"I want to provide an alternative for councillors who might think Kevin is not doing the job properly," Cr van de Ven said.
"I believe I can do the job of mayor and deputy mayor at least as well as the incumbents and represent the community in the very trying circumstances we find ourselves in.
"We've had a lot of announcements around business closures and job losses.
"The job of mayor needs to be someone with really good business acumen and skills to try and offset those job losses as well as we can."
Albury Council elections were delayed for 12 months due to COVID-19.
