The Australian-owned and family-operated Harris Farm Markets has been in business for almost 50 years.

Its new Albury store, due to open early next year, will expand the grocer group to almost 30 locations, across NSW and Queensland.

The first store was opened by David and Cathy Harris in 1971, in Villawood in Sydney.

Since then the business has remained family-focused, working to a philosophy that embraces support of locally grown fresh produce and sustainability.

"We've believed in something greater than just selling fresh food," said Tristan Harris, who is co-CEO of the business with his brothers Luke and Angus.

"We've believed in nature itself - the land, the sea, the air, the elements. It's a remarkable thing. It brings families together, supports communities, and gives farmers a means. It offers nutrients to our bodies, and joy to our taste buds."

At Harris Farm Markets, respect for nature determines the business's approach to produce, prices; indeed, the whole shopping experience.

"We want to be more market than supermarket, for shopping to be a pleasure not a chore, an experience of positivity, not just one of necessity," Mr Harris said.

With the aim to deliver fresh food direct from the source to consumers within hours, not weeks, Harris Farm has developed sustainable initiatives like Imperfect Picks, an offering of seasonal fruit and vegetables that might not look perfect from the outside, but are as perfect as ever on the inside.

By accepting produce that may look a little twisted, warped or wobbly, but is perfectly nutritious and tasty, Harris Farm is helping to reduce waste, support farmers and save money.

The business's mantra - "for the greater goodness" - has developed into a Sustainability Manifesto, which has become their guiding light on everything from packaging to interactions with community and business partners to reducing their carbon footprint.

"Our common purpose is to reconnect Aussies with the joy of food," Mr Harris said. "We're here to provide our customers food that nourishes our health, nature and the systems around it."
