Firefighters were called to the single storey weatherboard home on Clancy Lane at Myrtleford on Sunday night.
The property was fully alight when brigades arrived on scene, with strong winds fanning the flames.
CFA Commander Andrew Schulz said the occupant had been alerted by a smoke alarm
"He suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated by paramedics on scene," he said.
"The brigades were called at 8.50pm and were hampered by strong winds which forced the spread of the fire.
"It took approximately two hours to have the fire under control.
"Approximately 20 firefighters attended."
The cause of the blaze was being investigated by detectives and fire brigade investigators on Monday and remained unclear.
Investigators from Melbourne were brought to the scene.
A vehicle parked near the house was also burnt, but firefighters prevented the blaze spreading to any other homes.
