Ruckman Chris Knowles struggled to hold a spot at the Hawks in 2019, splitting his 16 games between seniors and reserves.
"I'm still young enough to play at the highest level I possibly can," the 23-year-old said.
Wangaratta has welcomed back premiership coach Dean Stone, who stepped down two years ago.
"Chris will be a great support for Zac Leitch, he's a very versatile ruckman-forward, who is fit and strong and ready to go," Stone said.

Knowles, who boasts 50 senior games at Rovers, was quizzed if he's got the best from himself.
"No, I'm currently the fittest I've ever been and going into a pre-season at this level, I've got a lot to work with," the 194cm big man said.
