The 33-year-old has spent the past two seasons back at his home club Mt Eliza in the powerful Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football league.
"We're excited to have a key backman of substantial body size, which is what we've been missing in the past and it will take some pressure off Kade Kuschert, who's shouldered a lot of that hard work and it will free him up," Roos' head of football Craig Spencer said.
Docherty's signing is ideal timing as a number of O and M clubs will now have to figure out how to combat Wangaratta's big forward line after Collingwood premiership player Ben Reid joined the Pies this week.

He will join Michael Newton and Josh Porter.
"With a few of the potential recruits we're talking to, we think it will give us a good springboard to launch into a more attacking type of play under (coach) Peter German."
