Police believe a small silver vehicle seen around Banks Street, off Captain Cook Drive, could be linked to the incident.
Superintendent Paul Smith said the 37-year-old was injured inside a home on the North Albury street about 10.40pm on Monday.
The man received "severe" lacerations to his arms and his head after entering the home.
"(The use of) any weapons is alarming and certainly forcing your way into someone's house is very alarming, which is all the more reason why we need that information from members of the public," he said.
The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Albury hospital in a stable condition.
Superintendent Smith said police had a "particular interest" in the silver vehicle.
