The Demon premiership player, who was named at centre half-forward in the league's 2019 Team of the Year, said it was a huge honour to fill the position occupied by his father in 1990 and 1991.
It is believed the last father-and-son combination to lead the Demons were Ray and Kevin Mack senior.
"It's probably the honour of my life so far," Harris, 32, said.
"Dad coached and I played under Ray briefly as well so it's all very humbling.
"My endeavour is to personally contact everyone who has played for Corryong since 2016 and extend an invitation to them to help us rebuild our footy club.
"We had our clubrooms dismantled in 2019, followed by the bush fires and then coronavirus so it's been hit after hit.
"I have a lot of support and I'm just really excited about the challenges ahead."
Harris, who has been captain of Corryong for the past two seasons, has played about 100 matches for the Demons since debuting as a 16-year-old in 2004.
He has also had stints with Walla, Kiewa-Sandy Creek and Western Australian club Mosman Park.
Harris hopes to land several recruits in coming weeks.
"We're looking ahead and not back," he said.
