Photographs supplied to The Border Mail show tall grass west of Tintaldra, in an area burnt out during last summer's fires.
An area where World War I memorial trees were burnt out during the fires has grass about two metres high.
The location and fact the uncleared areas are on a rise both increase the fire risk, with concerns raised that little had been learnt from last season.
Regional Roads Victoria aims to complete slashing in the region by Christmas.
"The safety of travelling Victorians is an absolute priority at Regional Roads Victoria - which is why fire risk mitigation is a focus all year round," regional director Steve Bowmaker said.
"RRV works closely with emergency services including the Country Fire Authority, Victoria Police and Department of Environment, Water, Land and Planning to prioritise its efforts in the highest risk areas."
The concerns were raised as Albury firefighters battled the danger period's first grass fire this week.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Frank Finlay said a blaze on Eastern Hill burnt about an acre of grass and scrub on Monday afternoon.
Nine tankers were deployed to the incident off East Street about 3.40pm.
"They stayed on scene for approximately an hour, blacking out to ensure there was no further fire spread," he said.
"There was no property damage but it's a reminder for people to call Triple-0 if they see an unattended fire and no fire trucks."
