The veteran galloper will be contesting his third straight cup at Wodonga on Friday after also running fourth two year's ago.
Stubbs said he expected Spunlago to be once again fighting out the finish in the $100,000 feature that lacks the same depth as the previous two years.
"I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the final field that some of the more fancied entries didn't accept," Stubbs said.
"Obviously not from a club point of view but from my own perspective.
"But there is no such thing as an easy race to win.
"And there still looks to be three of four horses in the race that will be very hard to beat."

Spunlago is the best credentialled stayer in the Riverina and has amassed almost $500,000 in career earnings.
The winner of the Albury Gold Cup in March has also proven ultra competitive in the city including a Flemington win.
Spunlago will tackle the Wodonga feature second-up after finishing unplaced in the Snake Gully Cup at Gundagai when resuming.
Dean Holland takes the mount on the $16-chance.
"I walked away satisfied from Gundagai and the Wodonga Cup has always been on the radar," he said.
"Ideally I would have liked him to be third-up but he missed the Goulburn Cup because of a heavy track.
"But he's fit enough, well enough and now we have to wait and see if he is good enough."
