Younie was a development manager at Adelaide Crows since 2014 before being contacted by new Roo coach David Noble late last month.
The pair previously worked together with the Crows.
"It was one that was left field to the fair," Younie, 41, told SEN.
"I was at home on a Saturday afternoon and got a phone call.
"We chatted about coming over and I wasn't expecting the phone call to be honest.
"I've got a great relationship with Dave."
Younie has built a reputation for building relationships with players and is looking forward to working with North Melbourne's forwards.
"'Nobes' spoke to me about coming over and looking after the forwards," he said.
"I'm super excited by some of the players who go through that area of the ground."
