Just days after a farmer finished a 300 kilometre walk raising awareness about the impacts of the basin plan on the river, the independent review of the MDBA's management performance in 2019-20 and its compliance with objectives and outcomes has found the decisions were sound.
The Independent River Operations Review Group is an independent advisory committee established under the Commonwealth Water Act 2007. Each year MDBA river operators are required to open the book on all their decisions to independent scrutiny.
Speak Up 4 Water deputy chair and vocal water advocate Lloyd Polkinghorne finished his journey at the Hume Dam on Saturday and said more needs to be done by the MDBA in tackling erosion along the Murray.
"I think some of the powers at be are a little concerned about the truths under the basin plan coming out," he said in a Facebook live video on Wednesday.
"The MDBA released a report saying erosion in the Murray has nothing to do with the basin plan.
"That is rather ironic under the plan we have totally changed the way water is delivered, the geographical shift in water use, the management of the river has changed.
"The people in power can't even admit the plan has anything to do with it." IRORG chair Peter Hoey said in what was a challenging year, the MDBA had done well.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"River operators had to deal with a continuation of the dry conditions of the previous two years through spring and summer, and the severe bushfires which affected large parts of upper Murray catchments during the 2019-20 summer," he said.
"The MDBA performed well in the 2019-20 water year, monitoring system performance closely and responding appropriately with adjustments to operations in the face of these challenging conditions.
"In total, 98 per cent of the specific objectives and outcomes were fully achieved, whilst the one area of qualified achievement related to minor breaches of flow targets which had no material impact on river operations, the environment, or communities."
IRORG made a number of recommendations, it also urged the MDBA to develop an overall quality assurance strategy for critical operational data, including hydrographic data on river flows.
MDBA head of river operations Andrew Reynolds said the findings of the independent review were a welcome confirmation.
