Albury's Sharon Mackey McEachern visited Jingdezhen for the first time in 2017 on a pottery tour of the region, which was historically rich in fine porcelain production.
Mackey McEachern booked artist residencies in the city in 2018 and last year. (Her planned residency this year was cancelled amid the coronavirus pandemic.)
"Jingdezhen is basically the capital of the world in porcelain production for over 1000 years," she said.
"There is great craftsmanship going back generations; some are fourth-generation ceramic and porcelain masters, who taught ancient and modern skills handed down over generations.
"I was really inspired by the first pottery tour to learn more about ceramics."
Mackey McEachern's latest work focused on traditional Chinese blue and white ink painting techniques infused with contemporary western design.
"It's inspired by the simple yet complex nature of the environment," Mackey McEachern said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mackey McEachern is presenting her first solo exhibition, Jingdezhen Shadows, at Art Partners Australia in Albury this month.
The exhibition features 70 pieces made during last year's four-week residency in China.
"It was fairly intensive," she said.
"I always knew it was going to be; I was working 12 hours a day for a month to allow me to produce all of the pieces."
Mackey McEachern said the pieces were packed by leaders in the field.
"They have expert packers and expert crate makers; there were no breakages and it took about a month to get to me," Mackey McEachern said.
Having practiced art and been a visual arts teacher for 25 years, Mackey McEachern has worked in varied mediums including printmaking and painting.
"I've been teaching ceramics throughout my career, but I've become heavily focused on it in my own practice," she said.
"The solo exhibition is the culmination of that."
Jingdezhen Shadows runs at Art Partners Australia gallery, 488 David Street, during December.
