But Argus says the Hume Football League club is making inroads and he's determined to be a part of it when the wheel turns at Urana Road Oval.
Argus spoke to The Border Mail this week about his recruits and where the improvement will come from.
BRETT KOHLHAGEN: You clearly have faith in the direction the Murray Magpies are taking after signing on as coach until the end of 2022?
BRETT ARGUS: Absolutely I do. It's easy to look at the scoreboard and say it was a bad year but I talk to opposition clubs and its players and get a lot of positive feedback. I wanted to provide some stability by signing on as I genuinely think we are moving in the right direction. We have a solid group together at the moment and there are some good things happening. We just need to be a bit patient.
BK: So you are confident of improvement in 2021?
BA: Definitely. We think we can improve significantly.
BK: Can you put a number on the wins you hope to achieve?
BA: Once you put a limit on it that's all you can ever do. Who knows how far we can go. The bulk of our list are 18 to 22-year-olds which is exciting plus we have one of two older blokes like our captain Hayden Edwards and Jarman Teesdale. They aren't that old either.
BK: How is training going?
BA: This will be our fourth week of training. Numbers have been good and, while it might drop off a bit before the Christmas break, I've been happy with the progress we have made.
BK: Talk us through your recruits?
BA: Daniel Jackson and Jason Hines have come over from North Albury and Spencer Jones is from Albury. They should all be good for us. We obviously picked up some players at the start of last season as well. I reckon we could easily have 12 new players in our senior side from our last game in 2019.
BK: Who do you see as the team to beat?
BA: I don't think Osborne has lost many and it has brought in some quality players as well. I think they will be the benchmark.
BK: There hasn't been a lot of recruiting in the league after the 2020 season was called off. Are you still hopeful of landing a few more?
BA: It has been fairly quiet which I can understand with no football being played. We still have a few irons in the fire. I guess we just need some players to give us a chance to show them we are tracking in the right direction. We're trying to develop a family atmosphere and being in town is obviously one big thing in our favour.
