Country Fire Authority incident controller Brett Myers said steep terrain presented challenges in tackling the one-hectare blaze on Spring Gully Road, Huon Creek, which began on private land about 2.30pm.
"We did actually call in a helicopter from Myrtleford who allowed us to get into another area where it was quite inaccessible and do its best to contain the fire," he said.
"But we then needed to get firefighters on the ground into that to make sure it's completely extinguished."
Fire crews stayed on the scene for about four hours blacking out.
Mr Myers said police were investigating the cause of the fire, but it appeared to come from a burn-off.

"Now we're in fire danger period, there is to be no burning off at all without a permit," the incident controller said.
"Take this as a bit of a warning from local firefighters.
"If the wind had have been a bit more significant or a bit of warmer day, it could have potentially had some quite significant results."
CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning personnel fought the blaze.
Crews attended from Wodonga West, Wodonga, Barnawartha, Leneva, Baranduda and Bonegilla brigades.
