But for Vicki Bibby, who is receiving treatment at the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre, getting ahead of the inevitable was a big achievement on Friday.
While holding her husband Rob's hand, Mrs Bibby lost her hair on her own terms when she had her head shaved at Hairhouse Albury.
"There is so much that is out of your control during cancer treatment - this is something I wanted to do for myself," she told The Border Mail.
Mrs Bibby was told she would lose her hair as part of her cancer treatment and decided to raise $2500 for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.

"I'm choosing not to let my hair fall out on its own, but am making the best of a bad situation by supporting a local charity in the process," she said. Mrs Bibby started chemotherapy on December 1 after a 52 millimetre tumour was found in her right breast and lymph nodes.
It comes after she underwent treatment for a small tumour in her left breast eight years ago, which didn't require chemotherapy.
"Already I can see the benefits of having this incredible cancer centre right here on the Border and everything being in the one place," she said.
