Warwick Horsfall has brought the curtain down on a career which began locally with the Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation and ended with nearly 25 years running his own consultancy firm, Habitat Planning.

In 1991, Mr Horsfall was the corporation's representative who worked with Albury and Wodonga councils to come up with a planning strategy for the two cities.

"If we are truly going to go forward as one city then basically there should be one planning strategy," he said.

"Without it things will stay disjointed with Albury doing its own thing and Wodonga doing its own thing.

"But in the interests of growing the city as a whole it would be good to see an overarching document."

Mr Horsfall worked at the corporation for four years from 1988 and remembers being told at his job interview that it was already under review with the 1970s growth centre grand plan of 300,000 people living in Albury-Wodonga by 2020 clearly unattainable.

"If they pulled it off we would probably be the same size of Canberra today," he said.

"It would have been a remarkable achievement.

"The amazing thing about it is that a government came in, set itself up, compulsorily acquired all this land and then became both developer and planning authority.

"Imagine trying to do that now.

"But the legacy of the corporation can still be seen around the town, particularly in terms of the open space areas required and set aside."

Mr Horsfall's boss at the corporation was John Alker-Jones who was principal planner up until his retirement 14 years ago.

Mr Horsfall joined Albury Council in 1992 before setting up Habitat Planning four years later.

The firm started in Olive Street and had stints in Townsend and Macauely streets before it's latest move to Kiewa Street this year.

The business employs seven town planners with Mr Horfall being joint partners with David Hunter in recent times.
