Until now, NSW licence holders had also needed to get a Victorian licence.
Fishing and Boating Minister Melissa Horne said the cross-border change would cut red tape for fishers and make it easier for interstate tourists to visit, bringing money into the Victorian economy in towns near the lake.
"We know recreational fishers want easier access to great Victorian fishing locations and allowing people with a NSW fishing licence to use Lake Hume will bring more tourists and NSW-based locals to the lake," she said.
"This is a great example of cutting red tape for communities in the north east and is a positive step towards further easing of licence confusion on the border."
