Australian tennis great Todd Woodbridge entered in Albury's Margaret Court Cup

Australia's greatest doubles player of the open era will team up with Patrick Fitzgerald, the son of seven-time grand slam doubles winner, John Fitzgerald, for the event at Albury grasscourts to start on January 8.

Entries are significantly lower than recent years at 236 players, largely due to international travel restrictions caused by COVID-19, but tournament director Phil Shanahan said the addition of Woodbridge will provide a huge boost.

"It's going to be great for him to come and play on the Albury courts," Shanahan said.

"We've got a Wimbledon curator in Shayne Ried so we're pretty excited to hear Todd's thoughts about the grass here because it will be his first time here.

"I had a bit of a laugh with him and expect him to be up early into pre-season training.

"I'd dare say there will be a few watching his match."

Fitzgerald has been a regular at the event and create a formidable combination with Woodbridge.

"Patrick has been coming to the Margaret Court Cup for the past 14 or so years and he phoned me on Tuesday night about his doubles partner," Shanahan said.

"Todd was there at Fitzy's place and they decided to play doubles together."

Nill Kyrgios, the mother of Nick, will return home to Albury to open the Margaret Court Cup next Thursday.
