The Roos have picked up a host of non-AFL recruits, but are still talking with a couple of former elite level players.
Interestingly, head of football Craig Spencer says some potential imports are angling for 'guest' games.
"They want to come up and play four or five games and while that's appealing, because these guys can really play, you've got to work it in with what you're already doing and making sure they'd be available when you want them," he said.
"Our preference is to get an AFL player that would play the whole season."
The arrival of Brendan Fevola at Yarrawonga in 2012 sparked the unique 'guest player' rush in the league.
The two-time Coleman medallist was originally going to play only home games, but Myrtleford stunned the league when it paid Fevola $5000 to play against them at the Saints' McNamara Reserve.
Fevola destroyed Myrtleford, but the controversial move paid off as the club hosted a massive crowd.
A handful of other clubs tried to replicate that off-field success, but could never match Fevola's popularity.
Myrtleford had Essendon's 2000 premiership player Scott Lucas for two games in 2014, while Sydney Swans' grand final winner Tadhg Kennelly also had a short stint at Albury in 2012.
The Roos also went down that path with ex-Collingwood, Carlton and Port Adelaide big man Cameron Cloke in 2019.
The club finished second last with only two wins that season, but the resurgence started when the club signed former AFL assistant Peter German last September.
The Roos have since picked up a number of players, including former VFL ruckman Tom Goodwin, but they are targeting a big on-baller.
"At this stage of the game, you've got to take what comes up, you might not be able to source exactly what you want because the player might not be available," Spencer offered.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The Roos have 46 player points at their disposal for the upcoming season, the highest of any O and M club.
The league also has a $120,000 salary cap, slashed from $160,000.
