Four thousand swimmers have so far raised $1.1 million through the Starlight Super Swim, which runs until the 24th.
Teagan Ellis, who is studying nursing at Wodonga TAFE and plans to advance her Diploma through La Trobe University, has already raised $1800.
"I have set a goal to swim 25 kilometres," she said.
"I'm not a swimmer, so I've shocked myself.
"I think the first swim, I did I did 40 laps, and the next day I did 60. It just depends what I feel like at the time, after work and study.
"I've got to swim just over 1000 laps to reach my goal."
The charity granted its first Starlight Wish more than 30 years ago and now creates more than 500,000 experiences for sick kids annually.
It is the third annual Super Swim challenge, and aimed to raise $1 million with Starlight chief executive Louise Baxter raising that COVID-19 had severely impacted their 2020 fundraising.
Ms Ellis, 22, works at Bunnings and has undertaken placements at the Albury Wodonga Private Hospital and in aged care at Benalla.
"I'd like to work in an acute setting straight away - I'm really looking forward to more placements," she said.
"It's something I've always wanted to do.
"We were meant to finish early this year, but because of COVID, we're a little delayed."
Ms Ellis has received great support from local businesses and plans to hold auctions.
"I wouldn't say there's any particular reason I wanted to do the swim challenge, other than the fact that I just wanted to do something good," she said.
"I have seen firsthand how horrible being in hospital is for children.
"I guess that sort of gave me the shove to get out of my comfort zone, when I read about it.
"It would be great to hear from anyone who is willing to donate items or support me, or donate directly.
"I'm amazed at how much we have already raised in the challenge."
