The pair noticed the 2005 dark green Mazda 6 sedan, which had two seats for their grandchildren, was missing after they left the Wodonga Bulldogs ground last Friday.
The car was set alight in a Hume Highway underpass, near Old Barnawartha Road.
Senior Constable Sean Kilsby said the vehicle was taken about 8.20pm, driven along Vermont Street, and set alight 30 to 40 minutes later.
"The victim was pretty shocked at the time," he said.
"They've made statements in relation to the matter.
"It's helping us with our enquiries but we need some more assistance from the public."
The offender is thought to be aged in his 20s or 30, and ducked through a gap in a fence to access the car.
