Chiltern's Isabel Edgar wins 21st club singles title at 84 years of age

The 84-year-old recently captured her 21^st club singles championship and came very close to a win against a world champion in the subsequent Ovens and Murray event.

Edgar qualified for the region's Champion of Champion singles and led former Chiltern player and eight-time Wodonga champion Kylie Whitehead in the second round.

The pair were locked at 16-all, but the World Bowls Champion of Champions finished strongly to defeat Edgar, 25-19.

"It was a good effort considering I'm 84 and she's only in her 20s," Edgar laughed.

"It was a thrill.

"I won my first match over there (in the Champion of Champions) fairly easily and then I had to play Kylie and she's a world champion.

"We were 16-all and then it was 19-21 and she got a three on the next end and went on to win 25-19.

"I don't know how I got through it all because it was a lot of ends."

Edgar was over the moon when she won her 20^th singles championship at Chiltern in 2016, but had doubts she would be able to add to it.

"I've been playing fairly well so I thought I'd give it a go and managed to win another," she said.

"I missed out on the championship the last couple of years.

"I got beaten early with the last bowl and I didn't expect to win this year, but I did.

"They keep saying I've had so much experience and I think that helps for sure."

Edgar was a keen golfer and took up bowls in 1985 after a shoulder injury on the course.

It didn't take her long to find her new calling.

"The first two or three years you're not up to that standard. You don't win unless you've been playing for two or three years unless you're a wizard," she laughed.

If that wasn't enough, Edgar still leads in Chiltern's A2 weekend pennant side and plays third in B2 pennant in the midweek competition.

The club sits fifth on the ladder in both and is in contention to qualify for the finals.

"I'm playing lead so I can sit down and have a spell," Edgar said.

"I play midweek pennant on Tuesdays too and I play third in that, but I can still have a spell which is the main thing, especially with the heat.

"I'm certainly exceeding my own expectations."

There's little time to rest with Edgar to play a round of the club's mixed pairs tournament on Friday, before a trip to Mulwala to take on YMGCR in a crucial pennant clash on Saturday.
