Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue are on the hunt for local foster carers to look after medium and large dogs until a permanent home can be found.
AWAR's Lorraine Webb said they have had a handful of foster carers for a long time who are looking to take a break.
"Just because they are called rescue dogs, doesn't mean they come with a bad background," she said.
"We just got two beautiful girls in who are sisters from a family who were relocating and couldn't take them with them and they are just gorgeous dogs.
"They are well-mannered and while one is quite shy at first they really need to be re-homed together." Ms Webb said a lot of people realise there is no cost associated with fostering rescue dogs.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We supply all the food, donated by MARS and other donations, all their vet work is covered while they are fostered," she said.
Grooming, baths and dog training is also available through AWAR before a dog is fostered.
"I sometimes take the dog homes and foster for a bit as well as other volunteers but we do need more people to come on board," Ms Webb said.
Rescue dogs generally take seven to 10 days to settle into a new environment so there are some requirements the AWAR team look at before fostering the dogs out.
"We are looking for homes with or without dogs," Ms Webb said. "Depending what they have been through - if someone that has a dog that is non-reactive that is really good.
"But sometimes it is nice to put a dog on its own with a family without other dogs."
A large, secure yard is also another requirement.
