Construction of the new site on Mitchell Avenue started in December and was recently finished.
Staff installed temporary fencing for the grass to grow ahead of the facility opening for public use.
But vandals targeted the skate park at the weekend.
The temporary fencing was moved, concrete structures tagged with white graffiti, and irrigation pulled from the ground.
A council staff member said they were "shattered" the damage would delay the opening.
"The skate park is complete and temporary fencing has been in place to allow the grass some time to take," the staff member wrote on Facebook.
"Over the weekend vandals made their way through the (temporary) fencing and damaged irrigation surrounding the skate park and graffitied the concrete surface.
