Albury skier Mark Pollock goes viral for his attire in world championships

Albury's Mark Pollock, a member of Wangaratta Ski Club, was labelled a 'madman' by media as he raced for more than 15 kilometres in a singlet and shorts in brisk conditions at the World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany.

Eurosport commentators described the outfit as 'eye-catching' as Mr Pollock raced without gloves, headwear or even the proper goggles.

However, Mr Pollock didn't complete the event after he was overlapped by the eventual winner, Russia's Aleksandr Bolshunov.

He was far more concerned about his DNF in the 15-kilometre event than the fact he became an internet sensation across the world.

"I always get hot at races. I only wear a vest when the temperature rises above 3-4 degrees," he said after the race.

"I am very disappointed that I was caught."

A day earlier, Mr Pollock had raced a 10-kilometre nordic ski event in a singlet and compression pants, but made the switch to shorts for the longer discipline as temperatures reached three degrees - a relative heatwave compared to conditions seen earlier in the championships.

He was 95^th in the field of 159 competitors in the 10-kilometre race, the third best out of the Australian skiers, which included Mount Beauty's Phillip Bellingham.
